An example of which will be the intended text book from this course.
Some additional thoughts- how this collaborative authoring trend naturally links in with open source, open education, social networking, social currencies, social ventures, crowd sourcing (marketing) and online textbooks.

bnleez says: Institutions and Open Learning Environments

More institutions will begin seeing the value in creating open learning environments (OLEs) where both credit and non-credit seeking students, other institutions, businesses, etc. can all interact. Although the shift will apply mainly to instruction, formative types of assessments will also be involved as non-credit seeking peers or others provide perspective that allows credit-seeking students to view their own knowledge, skill, and habits of mind in a different way. In creating OLEs, the curriculum will also open up in that the syllabus will consist of expressed outcomes (shifting away from behavioral outcomes) and will be shared openly through various portals, repositories, etc. Finally, the teacher will need to support learners in identifying the student's role within the OLE (i.e., learning network), specifically the relationships or ties they create (both cognitive and social) and the attributes that make up the primary nodes within their learning network.

Note: It seems as if there are a variety of trends here but they seem so interrelated that I felt compelled to include them all. What I have left out is the issue of certification, considering that such an issue probably would be best expressed as a separate artifact. I'm not sure if this is what the intention is for this section, but here it is. :) With everyone having their own opinion, it might be fun to create a wiki of artifacts (say in Wikieducator) where everyone can edit it as they wish. Just a thought. Benjamin
