Ending the week on creativity
I confess I had trouble with the second week of the open course in education futures. I left the synchronous session early thinking that it was much more interesting to BE creative (judged in a self referent manner as having pushed ourselves further than we had gone before) than it was to talk about creativity.
As I came back and purused the forums though I found one set of conversation that was very interesting - on how we assess creativity in others when it becomes our job to do so. Thanks to Maha Al-Freih, da.luisa, and bnleez for the following summation of how and on what basis creativity can be assessed: 1) the mastery of the “technical” tools, 2) the strength of critical synthesis of all analyzed products, 3) the originality of the product, compared with other, 4) the capability of “self expression”, adding personal components to the product, like own interests, tendencies and a strong intellectual perspective.
As a learner in a connectivism framework, I know I am best able to self assess my level of creativity - but to me it would always have to be relative to the rest of my other creative output. If I were judged by a teacher I could have mastered the skills they want, thought and produced along a different track and therefore would be seen as creative - however I might know that much of this work was easier to derive based on some new input from the rest of my network. I might in fact judge another piece as being much more - creative because with that work I had to dig deep within myself to capture new ideas and output.
It was interesting to think of creativity in this way, however I sign off on the topic still thinking it is more fun to BE than to talk about.
