One image of possible educational futures

Not sure at all that it's right. Not sure about whether everything flows in every direction. But I'm groping toward something there.

RSmallwood says: Missing 4th Element & "Fuzz"

I'm not quite sure what the 4th element should be . . . for the lack of a better word I'll call it validation. I'm thinking about a set of skills & resources that allow the student to:
- pick and choose what to learn
- test the worth of what they have learned
- convey to others what they have learned
- join (if they choose) a community of learner
Validation is the wrong word because of the traditional external authority flavour of the word. Give me a better word.

An other thing that I think may be missing is the "fuzz". I'm thinking of lurkers who are truly interested and following what is happening but for what ever reason don't join the process. Is there a way to draw them in and let us "hear" their thoughts. Should they have a mentor help them feel more comfortable in sharing?

ElaineHuber says: yes indeed

That fuzzy bit - that describes me to a tee. I've been lurking around here for a while reading watching thinking. Now its time to put down some words. Hoping time will make those words clearer, less fuzzy!
Thanks for defining me!

edwebb says: Filtering is absolutely the key skill

and networks, including mentors, peers, mentees, and other relationships, are among the best means to acquire effective filtering.

How does this look? http://dl.dropbox.com/u/640145/future_ed_v2.png

We're getting there. And filtering is closer than validating.

Anonymous says: Visual's representation - missing flow and learner?

It seems the three components are critical ones that define the means, the resources and the purpose/need. The graphic shows interconnectedness of those, but the graphic doesn't depict the flow or interaction between the components. Maybe there was more context in the original presentation, but I wonder about the learner and the assessment of learning noted in another blog thread...

edwebb says: This IS the original

This IS the original presentation, in that this graphic was something I threw together quickly when George & Dave asked for ideas on ed futures a few weeks back. I think the flows are in every direction - but I am not confident that all are equally important. As for where the learner is, I think my diagram is more about the environment within which learning happens, so the learner is everywhere in there.

Assessment is an issue that will consume much brain/processing power later in this course, I am sure. How's that for a prediction?
